Become a Trustee/Board Member

Interested in becoming a trustee?

The Saltaire Collection is the public face of the Saltaire World Heritage Education Association, a charity with the core aim of advancing education for the public benefit relating to the heritage of Saltaire.

The charity has a board of trustees responsible for ensuring that its aims are met. That needs a wide range of expertise and experience. Being a trustee can be interesting and rewarding. Are you interested? Please contact us if you have any questions.

About SWHEA

The Saltaire World Heritage Education Association (SWHEA) is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, reg. no. 1158756.

Our purpose is to advance education relating to the industrial heritage of Saltaire. In particular, for students, historians and researchers of all ages we wish to encourage an involvement in, and a better understanding of, Saltaire’s heritage and to foster a desire to preserve it for the future.

These aims are set out in our constitution which also describes how the charity is structured and operates.

You can read more about our aims, activities and history on our About page.

In the last few years the Saltaire Collection has successfully:

Catalogued 6000+ historical documents, maps, plans and images on a museums-standard database

Correctly stored archive items in acid free boxes and folders

Developed policies and procedures that meet national standards

Developed a wide range of learning resources

Received many visitors - international, national and regional - and assisted in new research

Established a new website holding the catalogue and many summary pieces about Saltaire’s heritage

Our Board consists of people with a wide range of backgrounds from educators to librarians to social researchers to finance to museum professionals.

For new trustees we are looking for:

  • A commitment to Saltaire’s history and preservation
A range of skills and experience that you can share with us
  • The ability to spare 40 hours a year to attend evening meetings

In particular, we are looking to recruit new Board members to join SWHEA’s Board of Trustee and Advisors, ideally with people who have experience of:

  • Working in Museums and Museum Accreditation
  • Writing bids to Grant Making Trusts
  • Developing Learning Resources
  • Experienced in encouraging charitable donations
We would still be interested in hearing from you if you have different skills to offer . We will provide support and advice to you to ensure you enjoy your time with us.

Associate members

We also have associate members of the board of trustees who support governance and management but do not have voting rights.

Associates can be involved in Trustee led sub-groups and projects. This is a good way of gaining experience before becoming a full trustee.

What's in it for you?

This is a chance to develop your professional skills in strategic management and development, gain Board experience, develop your networks, and enhance your CV.

You can do all of that at the same time as contributing to preserving and promoting the heritage of West Yorkshire’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site. That can be immensely rewarding in itself.

Unfortunately, though, you’re not likely to get the Legion d’Honeur like Sir Titus Salt did! However, you will play a part in preserving and sharing Saltaire’s fascinating heritage and enjoy learning about it as well.
