Helping to break down barriers to accessibility

B1-032.5.9: Workers leaving Salts Mill, with accessibility widget logo

We have made several important changes to our website aimed at improving accessibility – mainly for disabled people, those who are neurodiverse and where English is not the first language – but usable by everyone.

The website now features an accessibility widget which, along with other tools, allows users to adjust the font size and contrast to make it easier to read.

Other new features include a playlist of audio stories, most recorded by young actors from the Bingley Little Theatre. These stories provide a fascinating introduction to Saltaire’s history which can be enjoyed by those with hearing impairments as well as by a wider audience. There are currently five, telling the history of the village and some of the key people associated with it.

There are two new video tours of Saltaire one with sub-titles and one in spoken Urdu.  We also have a ‘word only’ tour aimed particularly at people with visual impairment.

Grateful thanks to Bradford Council for some crucial grant aid that allowed us to provide these features.

Maggie Smith, from the Collection, commented, “As we develop our plans for the future we want to make sure that our historical collection is as accessible and inclusive as possible. We are very grateful to Bradford Council for their funding and especially the Disabled People’s Action Group, Equality Together Bradford and others in the community for their support and advice that have helped us to achieve this aim.”
